After last night’s top 10 performances, one artist was eliminated from The Voice tonight. The bottom two sang for the instant save in yet another emotional elimination show, which opened with a performance by Joe Jonas’ pop-rock band DNCE.
After a montage in which season 10’s remaining artists paid tribute to their mothers, Carson Daly announced the first of the results. But first, he took the time to check in with Pharrell’s Daniel Passino and Adam Levine’s Shalyah Fearing about their journeys on the show so far. Passino said the competition has taught him to surround himself with good people. “My passion for music is what drives me,” said Fearing. The first contestant to advance to the top nine was Christina Aguilera’s Alisan Porter, who has been a frontrunner ever since her Blind Audition.
Daly next checked in with the coaches, asking Levine what universal themes he applies to his very diverse team. Levine said that, no matter what, he always tries to help his artists achieve what their specific visions are. Daly then asked Aguilera if she was confident about all of Team Xtina advancing to the top nine. “As a coach, I think they all, for sure, hands down deserve to make it through,” she said, adding that she isn’t one to count her chickens before they hatch.
Before the next round of results came in, Blake Shelton’s Mary Sarah shared that she is drawn to classic country music because she thinks it’s important to understand where certain music comes from. Team Xtina’s Bryan Bautista next reflected on his choice to sing in both English and Spanish last night, saying that he strives to be honest and genuine. “All I want to do is show people the different sides of me,” said Bautista.
Team Blake’s soulful country-rock artist Adam Wakefield was voted through next. America also saved Fearing, the youngest artist in the competition.
Sawyer Fredericks, who won season eight of The Voice as a member of Pharrell’s team, returned to perform his new single, “4 Pockets.” It was a fun performance, and it’s hard to believe Fredericks is still only 17 years old.
After Fredericks, the season 10 contestants were brought out again. The next artist to advance to the top nine was Team Pharrell’s Hannah Huston, who really has been gaining a lot of momentum the past few weeks. America also saved Team Blake’s Sarah, so the classic-country singer will be around for at least another week.
Daly talked to Team Adam’s Laith Al-Saadi and Team Xtina’s comeback artist, Nick Hagelin, about their experiences next. “Adam has helped me feel more comfortable in my own skin,” said Al-Saadi. Hagelin said that, prior to his comeback, he thought of the show as just a competition, but ever since Aguilera brought him back, he has seen it more as a chance to refine his craft.
Al-Saadi ended up advancing to the top nine, along with Team Xtina’s Bautista and Team Blake’s Paxton Ingram. That left Hagelin and Passino in the bottom two, and both artists had to sing for the live instant save.
First up was Hagelin, singing “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. He seemed to be having some pitch problems. Maybe nerves were getting to him because of the pressure of the situation. It wasn’t really representative of his strengths as an artist. Levine noted that he likes what Hagelin represents, but he didn’t really comment on the actual quality of the performance. “Everybody falls in love with you,” said Aguilera, also avoiding talking about the actual performance. “You’re in it for the right reasons,” she added.
Passino went with something more upbeat for his instant-save performance, singing “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars. The song choice definitely reflected the kind of music Passino is drawn to. Overall, his vocals were stronger than Hagelin’s, but Passino sometimes can feel too produced and not authentic or natural enough onstage. Pharrell let him know that no matter the outcome, as his coach, he is proud of what Passino has accomplished this season.
Viewers ultimately tweeted to save Hagelin. He’ll have to really work on his vocals if he hopes to stick around on the show much longer. The Voice continues with the top nine next week.
