Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club Launching Live Music Show on PBS

Washington, D.C.’s iconic 9:30 Club is launching a music variety show this April on PBS television. Garbage, Jesus and Mary Chain, Tove Lo, Ibeyi and Jess Glynne are among the initial slate of artists set to perform on the first three episodes of Live At 9:30 Hosted by Squarespace.

The hour-long public television program will also feature interviews, short films and comedic bits along with a mix of hosts and contributors, including Henry Rollins, comedian Hannibal Burress, NPR Music’s Bob Boilen (whose band Tiny Desk Unit played the first-ever 9:30 Club show), Jill Kargman of Bravo’s Odd Mom Out and comedian Ralphie May.

“We’ve been approached countless times to do a TV show here, and we’ve always passed,” said 9:30 Club co-owner and I.M.P. chairman Seth Hurwitz in a statement. “But Live At 9:30 is a great opportunity to work with people we trust to bring music variety to life in a way no one has even attempted. When I said we had no interest in just another concert program, they totally got it.”

Squarespace will host the the show online at www.LiveAt930.com and offer full episodes and exclusive content.

Additional artists announced for the initial episodes include The Arcs, El Vy, MisterWives, Frank Turner, MS MR, Cold War Kids and Youth Lagoon.

The 9:30 Club, which won Billboard’s 2015’s Touring Award for Top Club, is this year celebrating its 35th anniversary and just released an extensive 264-page coffee table book entitled 9:30: 35 Years of the Best Music Venue in the World.

The venue has hosted music legends (Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Al Green, Prince, James Brown, Dolly Parton) and contemporary stars (Adele, Drake, Foo Fighters, Jack White) alike while helping to foster Washington, D.C.’s dynamic local music scene (Chuck Brown, Trouble Funk, the Slickee Boys, Fugazi, Bad Brains have all performed there).
