Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette had quite the logistical challenge on their hands while filming their movie Boyhood over the course of 12 years. Hawke talked to David Letterman about the struggles they faced while on The Late Show on Tuesday.
He explained that both he and Arquette had to check in with director Richard Linklater every time they wanted to sign on to a new job. “It was a logistical nightmare,” said Hawke, adding that it was particularly difficult for Arquette who was filming television show Medium at the time.

Letterman joked that the movie also takes 12 years to watch and is “very popular in prisons.” “If we could dedicate 12 years, you should too!” added Hawke.
