Netflix is bidding farewell to Derek with a special.
The dramedy, which stars Ricky Gervais as elderly-care worker Derek Noakes, is counting the hourlong program as its “third season.”
“It always seems to be two series and a special. I did it with The Office, Extras, Idiot Abroad and, now, Derek,” said Gervais. “The way I write and the way I develop characters and the overall arc, that seems to be the optimum length for me.”
The British personality, who also writes, directs and produces the series, added: “People say they want a third or fourth season, but then they feel it spoils it. So you can’t win.”
The series follows Derek’s journey of working in a retirement home, where he has befriended Kev (David Earl), a lovable train wreck who lives with him; and Hannah (Kerry Godliman), a fellow care worker and Derek’s best friend.
In the upcoming special, Derek faces a lot of changes, including a baby, a wedding and potential goodbyes. Hannah’s love interest, Tom (Brett Goldstein), gets a new job, which allows him to spend more time with her, but Derek worries that Hannah won’t come back. Derek is also unhappy with Hannah for upsetting Kev, who goes missing. Meanwhile, Vicky (Holli Dempsey) takes on more responsibilities.
The stand-alone, which already aired in the U.K. in December, premieres on Friday, April 3, on the streaming service. The series was produced by Derek Productions Ltd. for Netflix in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Nordics and Benelux.
