Super Bowl! Party time! Excellent!
Mike Myers and Dana Carvey have resuscitated their Wayne’s World characters — fun-loving, basement-dwelling, public access TV hosts Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar — for an Uber Eats Super Bowl campaign. In doing so, the pair, who popularized the lovable slackers on Saturday Night Live, invited Cardi B downstairs as they help shine a spotlight on local restaurants.
“As a local access show, we want everyone to support local restaurants,” says Myers as Campbell in the spot before it takes a turn with subliminal messaging, a surprise appearance by Cardi B and a TikTok trend-inspired clothing swap. The full, 60-second spot debuted today and will air during Sunday’s Super Bowl on CBS. The Wayne’s World reunion was teased last weekend during a commercial break on SNL.
As part of the campaign, Uber Eats is launching a $20 million Eat Local Relief Effort over the next six months that will benefit independently owned restaurants, a sector of the economy that has suffered greatly amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The effort covers $4.5 million in micro-grants and an in-app donation button (matched by Uber) so diners can give more to local restaurants, among other initiatives. To promote ordering locally while watching the big game and beyond, Uber Eats will offer delivery for all local restaurants along with other offers.
In a statement in conjunction with today’s news, Myers said that when Uber Eats approached them with the idea, they were excited. “Local restaurants need our support more than ever right now,” he explained. Carvey added, “Wayne and Garth are the happiest characters we’ve ever played, and it just seemed like the world really needs them right now.”
Cardi B even name-dropped her favorite local L.A. restaurant. “Y’all know I love to eat, and right now we have got to be supporting our local restaurants — like The Griddle Cafe in L.A.,” she said. “So many spots are struggling right now, and it’s up to us to eat local! That’s why I teamed up with Uber Eats and my boys Wayne and Garth to help.”
Super Bowl Sunday, always packed with celebrity commercials and movie trailers, will also feature such stars as Jimmy Kimmel, Mindy Kaling and Matthew McConaughey (for Doritos), and Mila Kunis with Ashton Kutcher (for Cheetos), among others.
For Myers and Carvey, the Uber Eats outing follows a starry reunion last December hosted by Josh Gad for his series Reunited Apart. The 1992 film Wayne’s World, which remains the highest-grossing SNL-inspired film ($183 million globally), led to a sequel that debuted a year later.
