Jenji Kohan has inked a new overall deal with Weeds producer Lionsgate Television.
Under the pact, Kohan will continue to serve as showrunner on the Showtime dramedy starring Mary-Louise Parker and executive produce the Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black.
“Jenji’s deliciously dark sense of humor and her fearless approach to storytelling have made Weeds Showtime’s highest-rated comedy over its past seven seasons,” Lionsgate Television Group president Kevin Beggs said in a statement Thursday. “She’s a superb showrunner, and we’re excited to continue working together on the new season of Weeds, Orange Is the New Black and multiple projects in development. Her witty and distinctive voice clearly resonates with digital and traditional programmers alike.”
Showtime’s drug-dealing comedy Weeds will return for its eighth season July 1. Production on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, which like Weeds hails from Lionsgate, begins production in the fall.
“What can I say? Lionsgate is my joint, yo,” Kohan quipped.
Kohan is repped by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman.
