HBO used its highly anticipated Game of Thrones series finale to promote the upcoming season of Westworld.
On Sunday, the premium cable network debuted the first look at the Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan-created sci-fi drama’s third season.
For viewers expecting a return to the familiar, the Westworld footage was jarring as it largely revolves around new castmember Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and features new faces including Lena Waithe (Master of None), before cutting to an old friend (Evan Rachel Wood) in its closing seconds. Season three also sees Vincent Cassel join the cast.
“I’m excited to explore the idea of host as guests, as Bernard and Dolores are guests now,” Wright told The Hollywood Reporter shortly after the season finale, speculating about his and Woods’ characters’ future, as well as the show’s own new direction. “The mirror reflection seems that it’s turned on this new [incarnation of] Westworld, and that is the human world. I think the exploration now of [pretending to be] human inside this world as hosts could be rich territory. Once again, it seems there’s a possibility, again, without having read one word of season three, that the worlds are turned upside down and inside out once more.”
Check out the footage, above. Westworld season three debuts in 2020.
