Now it’s really real.
Deadly Adoption had been kept under wraps until The Hollywood Reporter exclusively broke news of the project, which serves as wish fulfillment for Lifetime movie fan Ferrell. Ferrell’s original plan was to keep the movie secret, so a day after THR’s report, multiple outlets inaccurately reported that Lifetime had pulled the movie because Ferrell issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly saying that he and Wiig were “deeply disappointed” that the “top secret” project had leaked to the press and had opted instead to “forego the project entirely.”
Lifetime wound up confirming THR‘s initial report in early June with a massive billboard on Hollywood Boulevard — with a conflicting premiere date of Sunday, June 20. (The trailer, below, corrects that to its actual Saturday, June 20 bow.)
Ferrell and Wiig star in the dramatic thriller as a successful couple who house and care for a pregnant woman (played by 90210 alum Jessica Lowndes) in the hopes of adopting her unborn child — then things quickly go awry. The movie is described as a campy, fun, contemporary wink at the genre, and it comes as Lifetime is poised to mark the 25th anniversary of its TV movie business.
The movie hails from Mar Vista Entertainment and National Picture Show. Rachel Lee Goldenberg (Escape From Polygamy, Love at the Christmas Table) directed the two-hour pic, which is based on a script from The Spoils of Babylon‘s Andrew Steele. Steele, Sharon Bordas, Fernando Szew and Jessica Elbaum will also executive produce alongside Ferrell and his Gary Sanchez Productions’ partner, Adam McKay. It marks a reunion for Steele with Ferrell and Wiig, who both starred in the IFC miniseries.
