When Vice President Joe Biden spoke out in support of gay marriage Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, he touted the network’s former hit Will & Grace as having done much to educate people on the subject. It apparently wasn’t the first time Biden had spoken similar words. The show’s co-creator Max Mutchnick said Biden had mentioned Will & Grace in a similar context several weeks before his endorsement.

“My husband and I were at a private function two weeks prior to the Meet the Press airing,” Mutchnick said Thursday on CBS This Morning. “Vice President Biden was talking to a small group and he made the reference to Will and Grace in that room and called me out at that moment.”
Mutchnick went on to speculate that Biden and President Barack Obama’s unveiling of their support for gay marriage had been “very choreographed,” noting the White House had recorded Biden’s remarks at the earlier event.

“He was testing the material out of town and then he took it to a larger house, Meet the Press,” Mutchnick said.
Mutchnick’s appearance came one day after Obama became the first U.S. president to endorse gay marriage. Earlier in the week on Meet the Press, Biden praised Will & Grace during his own endorsement of gay marriage, remarking: “I think Will & Grace did more to educate the American public more than almost anything anybody has done so far. People fear that which is different. Now they’re beginning to understand.”
