Humans, previously developed for Xbox, is an eight-episode co-production with U.K. broadcaster Channel 4. The series, from British writing team Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks) is an English-language adaptation of Sveriges Television and Matador Film’s acclaimed series Real Humans. U.K. indie production banner Kudos (Broadchurch) will produce the series, which was originally planned to share a premiere broadcast window on both the Xbox platform in North America and Channel 4 in the U.K. in 2015.
Humans is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a “synth” — a highly developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart. In the hope of transforming the way they live, one strained suburban family purchases a refurbished synth only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences.
Hurt will play George Millican, a widower who has formed an close relationship with his out-of-date synth Odi, who he treats more like a son than a piece of machinery.
He joins a cast that also includes Katherine Parkinson, Tom Goodman-Hill, Gemma Chan, Neil Maskell, Will Tudor, Emily Berrington, Rebecca Front and Colin Morgan.
Hurt, whose TV credits also include Bonnie and Clyde, The Challenger Disaster and Moby Dick, is repped by ICM Partners.
