BUENOS AIRES – Chile’s huge win today against the 2010 World Cup champion Spain in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium echoed in the Latin American country’s TV ratings.
The match scored an overall 54 share, combining the two networks that broadcasted the game, Canal 13 (cable) and TVN (open), according to La Segunda newspaper.

The Canal 13 transmission was the most popular, with an average of 32.6 share, whereas open-air TVN drew 21.6.
The Chilean team won 2-0 against a weakened Spanish team after a 5-1 defeat against The Netherlands in the first round last week. While Chile has officially made it to the last 16, Spain has joined the ranks of world champions that get eliminated in the first round of the following World Cup, along with Italy, France and Brazil.

Although numbers aren’t quite definitive and still lack the figures of third broadcaster DirectTV, the figures for the audience watching the game were the closest Chilean TV has gotten to its most popular event in recent history: the rescue of the 33 trapped miners in 2010, which lasted several days and was seen by more than a billion viewers worldwide.
