The Netherlands’ dramatic exit from the World Cup set a new Dutch ratings record, with viewership figures topping the Netherlands vs Spain World Cup final in 2010.
An average of 9.1 million viewers, or 89.3 percent of the television audience, caught the match, which saw Argentina defeat the Dutch on penalty kicks to advance to Sunday’s final against Germany.
That compares to 8.5 million Dutch viewers for the 2010 final, the previous high-water mark. The second-most-watched match of this World Cup in the Netherlands was the country’s last first round game against Chile, which drew 8.1 million viewers.
A peak of 9.6 million viewers watched the semifinal game, or nearly 60 percent of the country’s total population.
The semifinal match proved popular with neutrals as well—19.5 million, or 73 percent of the audience, watched Netherlands vs. Argentina on German public broadcaster ARD; 9.77 million Brits, a 50.4 percent share of the viewing public, caught the match on ITV; and 9.2 million, or just over 45 percent of the audience, watched in Italy on public channel Rai.
On Twitter, the second semifinal ranks as the third-most-tweeted-about World Cup match so far with about 14.2 million tweets, according to Twitter.
The peak came with 446,000 tweets per minute when Maxi Rodriguez‘s penalty decided the game.
Facebook said it recorded 83 million interactions (posts, comments and likes) from 39 million users worldwide related to the semifinal match. Argentine star Lionel Messi was crowned Facebook’s man of the match, receiving the most social media buzz during the game.
