For Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi, working with stylist Jason Bolden is all about expressing yourself through fashion and letting your own personal quirks shine through.
“I feel like what’s been fun about the past year is that we’ve actually made fashion not only accessible, but really personal too,” Shahidi told The Hollywood Reporter for its 2018 Power Stylists issue. “There’s never been a situation in which I feel like the dress is wearing me, but it’s actually a fun, creative process.”
To sum it up more, Bolden adds, “If it doesn’t make us laugh, it does not work.”
As a stylist, Bolden has a roster of strong, accomplished females in the industry, like Ava DuVernay and Taraji P. Henson, who have mastered the balance of feminism and fashion, which Shahidi says go “hand in hand.”
“The two are intrinsically intertwined just because fashion has been such a political statement, whether it’s the reclamation of our power by wearing jeans and really pushing against the idea of what is considered feminine,” she said. “I feel like the two go hand in hand and overarchingly, it is a form of self-expression and so to be able to reclaim your space by reclaiming your aesthetic.”
“That’s the power,” Bolden added. “You honestly grab your power back that’s been given away for so long, if you will.”
