Is someone else about to learn Liza’s secret on Younger?
At an ATX Television Festival panel for the TV Land comedy Saturday, series creator Darren Star revealed that the show will travel to Ireland at the end of season four “for a very special episode.”
Star dropped one interesting hint when pressed further about the episode. “A passport does have one’s age on it so that’s all I have to say.”
That potential reveal comes after Liza (Sutton Foster) had finally come clean to Kelsey (Hilary Duff) about her true age in the season-three finale.
“It was time for Liza to tell Kesley,” Star said. “And part of it was because of the way she had realized how badly she hurt Josh. The only way she could find any redemption was to be truthful to Kelsey at this point.”
When the series returns June 28, that wound will still be fresh. “The writers did an amazing job with not letting Liza off the hook,” Molly Bernard said, noting it takes a “long time” for the two friends and colleagues to come together. “Liza is in a dark place for a while there,” she added.
Peter Herrman said that also changed the dynamic behind the scenes on the new episodes as well. “It was really uncomfortable on set when Hilary and Sutton were at odds,” he said with a laugh. “It was like the kid when your parents are fighting.”
As hinted in the season-four trailer, this wedge between Kelsey and Liza drives Kelsey closer to the only person to whom Liza revealed her secret: Josh (Nico Tortorella).
“Both of our hearts have really been broken by Liza so it makes sense that these two characters find each other because they have no one else they can talk to about this,” Tortorella said.
For Kelsey, this new friendship comes ahead of a big season for her. “She’s a strong girl and i think you might learn more about her character and her backstory this season,” Star said. “She has a lot of strength and a lot of toughness. She is basically now playing for herself.”
Producer Alison Brown admitted there was a “big debate” about Kelsey’s and Josh’s growing relationship, which comes after his breakup with Liza when he tried to propose but caught her kissing Charles (Peter Hermann). “I think he starts to navigate what his relationships with other people look like and how he can be the best partner to somebody else,” Tortorella said.
Liza’s decision to confess to Kelsey will make the show explore “what is truth and what’s the importance of truth and what’s the value of truth” in season four, according to Star. That development is also spawned by the introduction of Kristin Chenoweth as a Kellyanne Conway-like character as well as the real-life debate occurring regarding “fake news” in conjunction with the current administration. “What the entire country is about is what the show is about,” Star said.
(In addition to Chenoweth, guest stars include Jennifer Westfeldt and Aasif Mandvi.)
When discussing the upcoming season, Hermann said “it get very complicated,” but teased a big payoff for longtime viewers.
“I feel like more happens of consequence in season four than all of the seasons of Younger,” Star said. “There’s a lot of just kind of like growth and surprises that are in store for all the characters.”
Younger returns Wednesday, June 28.
